Hey, I’m Patch
I am an integrative therapist who works primarily with men individually, as well as couples, families, and groups. Integrative means that I’m not dogmatic in my approach and I work with all my clients to create a bespoke plan where I use whichever tools are most appropriate for the given challenge.
Therapy is part science, part art. Having spent a prior life in business and schooled at research institutions, I am results driven and action-oriented. While the insight and the “why” behind things is paramount, at the end of the day changing your behavior is how you change your life. My behavioral training (CBT, DBT, Schema Therapy, Seeking Safety) gives us our tools and measuring sticks for this stage. Typically these are quite helpful for symptom management and coping skills for things like anxiety, depression, panic attacks, phobias, substance use and anger management. This can often be shorter-term care where we “resource” you with tools and get you some quick wins.
On the other hand, trauma and core beliefs (e.g. “I’m a failure” or “I’m unloveable” or “I am weak”) require a more nuanced and artful approach. This is where remarkable healing can happen, where new neural pathways are formed, and where we create a new and more compassionate relationship to our multitude of different “selves” or “parts” that have been battered along our respective life paths. For this I use a combination of Internal Family Systems, EMDR, and somatic tools.
In the end, my goal is to be arming you with the tools you need to build a healthy support system/secure relationship and ultimately become your own therapist. We will partner to build your roadmap, and I will be your champion on the journey. Let's do this :)
Background
Despite wanting to be a therapist as a high schooler, I followed a more traditionally masculine path because that’s what I thought I was supposed to do. I ran social impact ad agencies in New York for a decade, had “made it” by every measure of what pop culture tells us, and I was still mostly unhappy. I was running from my past, my emotions, and myself. Through therapy I got back in touch with who I really was underneath all the masks and layers - a sensitive guy - and found my way back home. It was the right move.
I received my Masters in clinical social work from UCLA in my hometown of Los Angeles. I currently practice virtually in Brooklyn, NY.
